Finding Wonder in Far North Queensland
Some trips stay with you long after you've returned home. My recent journey to Cairns with my dear friend Petra, a textile conservator visiting from Germany, was one of those experiences. We travelled north in search of inspiration—visiting galleries, exploring significant cultural and natural sites, glamping in the rainforest, and immersing ourselves in the remarkable landscapes of Far North Queensland.

From the ancient beauty of the Daintree Rainforest to pristine beaches, cascading waterfalls, and the vibrant underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef, every day offered something extraordinary. For two artists, it felt like stepping into a living sketchbook, where colour, texture, pattern, and light constantly demanded attention.
One of the highlights was exploring the reef. Petra was captivated by the incredible diversity of marine life, marvelling at the brilliant corals and tropical fish that make this place one of the world's great natural wonders. At the other end of the scale were the enormous crocodiles—ancient, powerful creatures that inspired equal parts fascination and respect. Seeing them in their natural habitat was unforgettable.
Perhaps the most magical moment came when we finally spotted the elusive platypus. After much patient searching, catching a glimpse of this remarkable animal felt like receiving a quiet gift from the landscape itself.
Our evenings were spent glamping in the rainforest, falling asleep to a chorus of insects, frogs, birds, and rustling leaves. Surrounded by towering trees and the sounds of the forest, it was impossible not to feel connected to the rhythms of nature. There is something deeply restorative about sleeping beneath a canvas roof while the rainforest continues its ancient conversations around you.
Travel has always been an important part of my creative practice. It reminds me to slow down, to observe more carefully, and to remain open to surprise. Every place has its own stories waiting to be discovered, and Far North Queensland offered them in abundance—from tiny rainforest fungi and colourful birds to coral gardens beneath the sea and landscapes that have evolved over millions of years.
The trip was filled with laughter, conversation, creativity, and shared moments of wonder. Experiencing these extraordinary places alongside Petra, seeing them through the eyes of someone discovering Australia for the first time, made the experience even richer. We returned home inspired, carrying with us not only photographs and memories, but a renewed appreciation for the beauty, diversity, and quiet magic of the natural world.
