A Weekend of Connection at the Dupang Festival
Spending the weekend camping at the Dupang Festival in the Coorong was an unforgettable experience of culture, community, and connection to Country. Set within the beautiful coastal landscape, the festival brought people together to celebrate Aboriginal culture through storytelling, music, dance, art, and shared experiences.

Camping on Country created a wonderful sense of community, allowing time to slow down, meet people, and immerse ourselves in the rhythm of the festival. Listening to Elders and community members share stories offered a deeper understanding of the history, culture, and enduring connection between people and place.
One of the highlights was participating in a basket-weaving workshop, learning about traditional techniques and the knowledge embedded within the making process. Like all craft traditions, weaving carries stories across generations, reinforcing the importance of creativity as a way of preserving and sharing culture.
Throughout the weekend, traditional dance performances celebrated the stories of Country and ancestors, while contemporary Aboriginal musicians brought a vibrant energy that reflected the continuing strength and evolution of culture. The festival beautifully balanced tradition with contemporary expression, demonstrating that culture is both deeply rooted and constantly evolving.
As the sun set over the Coorong each evening, the landscape seemed to slow with it. Sitting quietly, watching the changing colours of the sky and listening to the sounds of birds, wind, and water was a reminder of the restorative power of nature. Those moments of stillness became just as memorable as the performances themselves.

As an artist, experiences like this are a source of inspiration. The Dupang Festival was more than a celebration—it was an opportunity to listen, learn, connect, and appreciate the richness of Aboriginal culture. I left with a renewed sense of wonder, gratitude, and a deeper appreciation for the stories held within both people and place.
